Don’t demand fees in dollars, CBN warns schools, landlords

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday warned schools, landlords and other business enterprises against demanding foreign currencies for the settlement of transactions carried out within the country.
The CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, gave the warning while briefing journalists shortly after the end of the two-day Monetary Policy Committee meeting, which was held at the central bank’s headquarters in Abuja.
Emefiele said the official currency of the country remained the naira and warned that the central bank would no longer tolerate what he described as the “dollarization” of the economy.
The CBN governor said if the development remained unchanged, the bank would be forced to go after such organizations that were in the habit of demanding foreign currencies for the settlement of transactions.

Microsoft drops Internet Explorer brand for a new name.

Photo:EPA

Internet Explorer, the Microsoft browser that is almost 20 years old, is to be killed off and replaced by a new operating system.

Microsoft has confirmed that its new browser, code-named Project Spartan, that is due to be unveiled later this year, will not use the familiar Internet Explorer name.

"We’re now researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our browser should be in Windows 10," the company's marketing chief Chris Capossela told a conference.

Internet Explorer once dominated the market and had more than one billion users but it could not compete when Firefox and Google’s Chrome launched with faster technology and slicker design.

Microsoft is thought to be dropping the brand in a bid to shed “negative perceptions" gathered since its 1995 launch.

The software is known to be slow and has had various security problems.

The company has often talked about changing the browsers’ name to rejuvenate its reputation.

Court nullifies movement restriction during Lagos monthly sanitation

A Federal High Court in Lagos has declared as unlawful the restriction of citizens’ movement during the monthly Lagos enviromental sanitation exercise. Justice Mohammed Idris, in a judgment delivered on Monday, held that such restriction of movement, in the name of sanitation, amounted to a violation of the citizens’ right to personal liberty and freedom of movement protected by sections 35 and 41 of the Constitution. He therefore voided the power of the Lagos State Government and its agent to arrest any citizen found moving between 7am and 10am on the last Saturday of every month when the enviromental sanitation exercise is observed. Britain's plan to join China's 'World Bank' angers Washington

China and 20 other countries signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the Beijing-headquartered bank in October Photo: Reuters

Britain has announced plans to become the first major Western country to join a Chinese-led development bank, drawing a concerned response from the US.
The $50bn (£33.6bn) Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has been feted by Beijing as a way of financing regional development, and is seen as a potential rival to US-based institutions such as the World Bank.
Chancellor George Osborne said Britain would join discussions with other founding members to set out the institution’s governance and accountability structures later this month, in a move to bolster relations with China.
“Forging links between the UK and Asian economies to give our companies the best opportunity to work and invest in the world’s fastest growing markets is a key part of our long-term economic plan,” Mr Osborne said in a statement.
“Joining the AIIB at the founding stage will create an unrivalled opportunity for the UK and Asia to invest and grow together.”
The move drew a cautious response from Washington, a rare note of discord in the special relationship that follows criticism from the US about Britain’s falling defence spending.

Zimbabwe expelled from 2018 World Cup

Zimbabwe have been expelled from 2018 World Cup qualifying for failing to pay former coach Jose Claudinei Georgini. Football's world governing body FIFA said in a statement it had taken the action "as a result of the non-payment of an outstanding debt". FIFA added that Zimbabwe's Football Association (Zifa) failed to make the payments despite a grace period. Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela told BBC Sport that the body would appeal against the ruling. "We have already started to engage authorities in Zurich," he said. "In any process you can appeal - just because a ruling has been declared, it doesn't mean the door has been closed."

Obas don’t campaign for politicians, Awujale tells Jonathan

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has told President Goodluck Jonathan, that it is not proper in Ijebuland or Yorubaland for an Oba to canvass for votes for any candidates seeking elective posts.
Rather, monarchs in Yorubaland only encourage their subjects to make their informed choices.
The monarch said this when President Goodluck Jonathan paid a private visit to him in his palace in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
President Jonathan, who arrived the palace around 11.15am in a convoy, was accompanied by the National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Adamu Mu’azu; a former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Governors of Bayelsa and Ondo states, Seriake Dickson and Olusegun Mimiko respectively, among others.
The royal father said any Oba canvassing for votes for any political party’s candidate would be courting trouble. He said rather than engaging monarchs for campaign, each candidate must go out and sell his or manifesto to the electorate.
He said, “In Ijebu here, it is not possible for any Oba, not even only in Ijebu, in Yorubaland, to go out and say vote for this, vote for that; that person is looking for trouble Read More

Hillary Clinton blasts Republicans over Iran nuclear letter

Former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaks during a news conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York March 10, 2015.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday excoriated Republican senators for their letter warning Iran against a nuclear deal with President Barack Obama, saying they either were trying to help Tehran or harm the U.S. commander-in-chief. Monday's open letter to Iran's leaders, signed by 47 Republican senators, sparked a political firestorm. Vice President Joe Biden also sharply criticized the lawmakers while three potential 2016 Republican presidential candidates, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, former Texas Governor Rick Perry and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, threw their support behind the letter. Clinton, a likely Democratic presidential candidate, said the Obama administration is in the midst of intense negotiations for a diplomatic solution to close off Iran's pathway to a nuclear bomb and provide unprecedented access to its nuclear program. "AND ONE HAS TO ASK, WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THIS LETTER?" CLINTON SAID IN AN APPEARANCE AT THE UNITED NATIONS

China says Dalai Lama less and less influential, but must reincarnate

Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is becoming less influential, both abroad and in Tibet, but his suggestion he will not reincarnate is still a "betrayal" of the religion and the country, a top Chinese official said on Wednesday. China says the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in India after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, is a violent separatist. The Buddhist monk denies espousing violence and says he only wants genuine autonomy for Tibet. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is these days being received by fewer and fewer foreign leaders, because of the anger it draws from China, the world's second-largest economy. Zhu Weiqun, chairman of the ethnic and religious affairs committee of the top advisory body to China's parliament, said such meetings would cause these people "who don't know right from wrong" to "lose status" in the eyes of Chinese people. "At the same time, the international media is less and less interested in the Dalai Lama," Zhu, known for his hardline stance on Tibet, told reporters on the sidelines of parliament's annual session. Even in Tibet, he is exerting less influence, as demonstrated by the decline in the number of people immolating themselves, Zhu added Read More

The tough, but exciting world of a female Marwa operator.

Mrs. Awolowo Nike, 37, was quite cheerful that Monday afternoon, though she had been working for hours under the scorching sun. In fact, as she went about her business, she had a smile for everyone she met, an indication that she has been enjoying every moment of it since she went into the transport business some four months ago.
‘’Ijesha next turn! Ijesha, enter with your change o…’’ she hollered, while steering her fairly used tricycle popularly called Keke Marwa towards this reporter and a male colleague. She kept on smiling even after the invitation to board her vehicle was politely turned down.
Though she is not the only female tricycle operator in Lagos, but Madam Nike’s story will certainly serve as a source of inspiration and motivation to other women, especially for those seeking for means of self-employment at a period of increasing unemployment in the country.
While some women in her position would prefer to stay glued to their television sets watching different types of programmes, this mother of three chose the male-dominated transportation business to assist the husband in putting food on the family’s table  Read More

Confusion, as server failure mars commencement of UTME exams

CANDIDATES WRITING UNIFIED TERTIARY MATRICULATION EXAMINATION
(UTME) IN ABUJA ON TUESDAY .NAN

The postponed 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, billed to commence yesterday, nationwide, was again marred by some hiccups over the failure of internet servers as well as failure of the biometric machines to capture candidates’ thumb-prints and other data at some centres.
Another controversy which emerged was the complaints raised by candidates who registered for the UTME in Lagos State, but were posted to neighbouring states of Osun, Ogun and Kwara to write the examinations.
This development it was learned was as a result of shortage of Computer-Based Test, CBT centres in Lagos State to cater for the huge number of candidates billed to write the exams.
According to the Public Relations Officer of Joint Admission Matriculation Board, JAMB, Mr. Benjamin Fabian, Over 1.4 million candidates will be writing this year’s UTME across 400 CBT centres nationwide.
According to reports from the University of Nigeria, UNN, Nsukka, Enugu State, where the UMTE was held at the Department of Economics, the first batch of candidates who were expected to start the examinations did not start until at about 3.30 pm due to lack of the internet.
Thousands of candidates who travelled from different areas to the centre waited endlessly. JAMB officials who were on hand asked candidates for batch two who were to write their own from 10 am to wait so that they would not come back on Friday for the CBT. Read More

Biden Rebukes Senate Republicans Over Letter to Iran. By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS- The New York Times

WASHINGTON — The White House has berated Senate Republicans for writing to Iran’s leaders warning them against a nuclear agreement with President Obama, saying their letter skirts the Constitution and sends a dangerous and conflicting message. In a lengthy and harshly worded statement released late Monday, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., a Senate veteran of more than three decades and a former chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said he could recall no other instance in which senators had written to the leaders of another country, “much less a foreign adversary,” to say the president had no authority to strike a deal with them. “This letter, in the guise of a constitutional lesson, ignores two centuries of precedent and threatens to undermine the ability of any future American president, whether Democrat or Republican, to negotiate with other nations on behalf of the United States,” Mr. Biden said. “Honorable people can disagree over policy. But this is no way to make America safer or stronger.” Read More

G.O.P. Senators’ Letter to Iran About Nuclear Deal Angers White House. By PETER BAKER- The New York Times

WASHINGTON — The fractious debate over a possible nuclear deal with Iran escalated on Monday as 47 Republican senators warned Iran about making an agreement with President Obama, and the White House accused them of undercutting foreign policy. In a rare direct congressional intervention into diplomatic negotiations, the Republicans signed an open letter addressed to “leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran” declaring that any agreement without legislative approval could be reversed by the next president “with the stroke of a pen.” The letter appeared aimed at unraveling a framework agreement even as negotiators grew close to reaching it. Mr. Obama, working with leaders of five other world powers, argues that the pact would be the best way to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb. But critics from both parties say that such a deal would be a dangerous charade that would leave Iran with the opportunity to eventually build weapons that could be used against Israel or other foes.

World Bank admits ignoring own rules on fighting poverty. Written by Marcel Mbamalu (with agency report) –ngrguardiannews.com

THE World Bank may have reneged on its commitment to fighting poverty when it reportedly admitted that it had failed to follow its own rules, according to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). In specific terms, the bank, which bankrolls dams, roads and other big projects in Africa and other developing countries admitted failure in protecting the poor people who are negatively affected by the dams. ICIJ’s Sasha Chavkin and Mike Hudson, in conjunction with The Huffington Post, reported that the World Bank’s recent announcement amounts to “a reversal of its previous efforts to downplay concerns raised by human rights activists and others working on behalf of the dispossessed –people evicted from their land, sometimes in violent ways, to make way for World Bank-financed initiatives.” Both the ICIJ and The Huffington Post had also informed bank officials that they had found “systemic gaps in the bank's protections for people who lose homes or jobs because of development projects.” The media outlets alleged that the World Bank “failed to respond to the news organisations’ repeated requests over the past several weeks for an interview with Jim Yong Kim, the president of the World Bank Group, the parent institution. The news outlets have been pressing the bank for months for answers to questions about how well it enforces its own social and environmental safeguards.” Read More

UNIZIK suspends 5 lecturers for misconduct - Written by NAN

THE management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka has suspended five lecturers for examination misconduct. The institution’s Director of Publications, Mr Emma Ojukwu, confirmed the suspension in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Tuesday. He said that the lecturers were suspended on March 2 for three months with half salaries pending the outcome of the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee Report. He said the lecturers were from the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry and the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering. Ojukwu said that they were found culpable in the first semester of 2013/2014 academic session for assisting students in answering questions and frivolous award of marks to undeserving students. The other offences were failing to submit examination attendance list, collection of money from students for upgrading of results, sharp practices and irregularities in result sheets. He said that the administrative verifications would soon be conducted in other departments to fish out such culprits. He said that the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, had warned some heads of departments not to collect money from students for registrations. The director said that a review process had been instituted for administrative action on the matter. (NAN)

Union warns against religious crisis at UNIOSUN. By FEMI MAKINDE- Punchng.com

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions at the Osun State University has urged religious leaders not to play up religious sentiment into the crisis rocking the university. A group known as the Coalition of Muslims’ Rights Activists Nigeria, in a statement, had accused Governor Rauf Aregbesola of allowing Christian-dominated governing council of the university to victimize the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Okesina, who is a Muslim. The group alleged that the Prof. Gabriel Olawayin (SAN)-led council suspended the VC despite the fact that the council had no power to do so. Apart from the VC, the Registrar, Mr. Julius Faniran, and the Bursar, Mr. Fatai Lasisi, are also on suspension.
